The telecom industry in Gujarat lost 6.38 lakh mobile users by the end of May 2020 due to the lockdown caused by the Kovid-19 epidemic.  The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Wednesday released a report on mobile subscription figures for the month of May.  Accordingly, consumers in Gujarat have shown indifference towards telecom companies like Vodafone-Idea and Airtel.  Looking at the three-month figures for March, April and May, Reliance Jio's only customer base has grown.  During this time, Vodafone-Idea lost 9 lakh subscribers and Airtel lost 10 lakh subscribers, while Geo's subscribers increased by an estimated 2 lakh.

 Millions of customers fell
Vodafone-Idea, Gujarat's largest telecom operator, has reported negative growth once again in May, according to a TRAI report.  The number of Vodafone-Idea subscribers fell by 9.03 lakh from 2.70 crore in March to 2.61 crore in May.  Similarly, the number of Airtel subscribers fell by 10.42 lakh to 99.50 lakh in May.

People are now using a single seam instead of two
According to telecom sector insiders, mobile subscribers stopped using more than one SIM card to save costs.  In the past, people used to have more than one SIM card to make calls and data affordable. To reduce costs, mobile holders are now avoiding having an additional SIM card or mobile number.

 BSNL's customer base grew
According to the data, there has been a slight increase in the subscribers of state-run telecom company BSNL.  It had 61.04 lakh subscribers in April, an increase of 1547 subscribers to 61.05 lakh in May.  The number of Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications subscribers remained stable at 605 during the period.

 Increased mobile portability
TRAI data shows that mobile portability has increased in Gujarat.  Portability means moving from one network to another.  In April, 3.26 crore customers applied for mobile porting, which increased to 3.27 crore in May.
